"We Are One", featured in Disney's The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, is a song sung by Simba (Cam Clarke) and Kiara (Charity Sanoy).
Background
It follows Kiara's encounter with Kovu, Zira and the Outsiders, which puts herself in danger, Simba explains how important she is to the pride, how much he and Nala love her, and teaches her that their family and the pride is "one". This song is the musical equivalent to the first film's talk about the Great Kings of the Past with Mufasa and Simba. During this song, Kiara asks Simba if it is okay that she wants to be herself.
Lyrics
Simba:
As you go through life, you'll see
There is so much that we
Don't understand
And the only thing we know
Is things don't always go
The way we planned
But you'll see every day
That we'll never turn away
When it seems all your dreams come undone
We will stand by your side
Filled with hope and filled with pride
We are more than we are,
We are one
Chorus:
Family, family
We are one (2x)
Kiara:
If there's so much I must be
Can I still just be me,
The way I am?
Can I trust in my own heart,
Or am I just one part
Of some big plan?
Simba:
Even those who are gone
Are with us as we go on
Your journey has only begun
Tears of pain, tears of joy
One thing nothing can destroy
Is our pride, deep inside
We are one
Chorus:
Family, family
We are one (2x)
Simba:
We are one, you and I
We are like the earth and sky
One family under the sun
All the wisdom to lead
All the courage that you need
You will find when you see
We...are...one
Chorus:
(One one one)
Family, family
We are one (repeat)
Trivia
- This song was featured on the Disney Sing Along Songs: Honor to Us All VHS in 1998, albeit using a different version with different instrumentals. This version could've been an early version of the song before it was finalized.
- There is actually an error right before Simba starts to sing when he purrs and rubs his chin affectionately against Kiara's body. In real life, Lions really are not able to purr; the only cats that can purr are cheetahs, cougars, and domestic cats as well as lesser cats like Bobcats.
- In the soundtrack Return to Pride Rock, the song is included along with a remix of the song sung by Angélique Kidjo in part English and part African.
- This song was nominated an Annie Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement for Music in an Animated Feature Production along with "My Lullaby".
