"We Find Out the Truth, Sort Of" is the seventh episode of the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. It was released on January 23, 2024.
Synopsis[]
Our heroes journey across the Underworld, and bargain for their safety with the god of the dead.
Plot[]
The episode features flashbacks throughout. Sally attempts to get a young Percy into a new school, despite his resistance to doing so. She struggles with getting him accepted as the administrator finds Percy's habits disturbing. Afterwards, Sally tries to treat Percy to dinner who believes that she is trying to get rid of him. Saddened, Sally privately summons Poseidon and tells him that she is going to send him to camp. Poseidon deduces that she does not want to and supports the idea of him staying with her so that he can learn from the real world before his world begins to impede on Percy.
In the present, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover find the entrance to the Underworld via a waterbed store owned by Procrustes, or Crusty, Percy's half-brother. Crusty attempts to lure Percy into one of his waterbeds, which is actually a trap, but Annabeth uses the invisibility cap to push him in instead. The trio find the entrance, while also taking a squeaky toy to manage Grover's stress and head down into the underworld which is depicted as a vast, grey, rocky wasteland. They run into Charon who refuses to let them cross the River Styx with him because they are alive and he sends Cerberus after them.
Cerberus swallows Grover, but Annabeth manages to calm him by scratching his neck, something that she picked up from having a dog of her own at one point. Grover falls out of Cerberus' mouth, but loses one of the pearls in the process. Grover uses the winged shoes to fly Percy up over a cliff while Annabeth uses Cerberus to project herself upwards. Percy then uses the squeaky toy to distract Cerberus away.
The trio enter the Asphodel fields, filled with deceased people who are permanently rooted due to being full of regret. As they attempt to flee, Annabeth gets rooted. She refuses to divulge what her regrets are and instead uses her pearl to escape, telling Percy and Grover to finish the quest.
Percy and Grover happen upon a vast brightly lit desert where the latter is suddenly pulled by the winged shoes towards the Pit of Tartarus. Percy plants himself and Grover long enough for the shoes to detach and fall into the pit. At this point, Percy discovers that his backpack, which was given to him by Ares, contains the Master Bolt. The two realize that Ares was working with Hades in order to claim the Bolt for themselves. Rather than returning, Percy and Grover decide to continue to Hades' palace to rescue Sally.
Upon entering, Percy and Grover are greeted by Hades who reveals that Sally is frozen solid after he saved her from the Minotaur. Hades asks for a trade, but they learn that he does not want the Bolt, nor was he working with Ares. He wants his Helm of Darkness which was used to steal the Bolt. Contrary to belief, Hades is happy where he is and doesn't want there to be a battle between his brothers. Percy realizes that the voice he has been hearing in his dream was Kronos'. Hades asks Percy to ask for his sanctuary so that the Bolt can remain with him, but Percy instead decides to fulfill the original promise of returning the Helm in exchange for his mother. Percy and Grover use their pearls to return to Earth.
Percy and Grover awaken on a beach where they are greeted by Annabeth. The three are suddenly confronted by a sword wielding Ares. Percy draws Riptide as he prepares to battle him.

Book comparisons[]
- The entire flashback sequence, which includes Sally meeting with Poseidon, was invented for the series.
- The Gabe interview in the TV window is not present due to it happening earlier in the series.
- The series establishes that in order to get into the Underworld, the trio must go to Procrustes first and get passed him. In the book, this was merely another stopover in an effort to hide from police. After defeating him, they leave and head to the real entrance which is at DOA Recording Studios, which is completely removed from the series.
- Procrustes, or Crusty, attacked the trio with his beds, which produced ropes that tied them down. In the series, he and Percy merely talk and he is shoved into his own bed by an invisible Annabeth.
- Percy and Crusty's relationship is not explored in the book.
- Due to DOA Recording Studios being removed, the entire sequence with Charon is completely altered. In the book, Charon is depicted as a dark-skinned, blond haired man with a nice suit and a strange accent. He appears in the form of a receptionist who turns the trio away when he learns that they are not dead. He changes his mind when Percy bribes him and promises to convince Hades to give him a pay raise. In the series, Charon appears in his traditional form and refuses to let them cross the River Styx completely.
- In the book, Charon takes them across the River Styx and nearly enter the Fields of Asphodel before they are confronted by Cerberus. In the series, Charon refuses to let them pass and summons Cerberus to chase them away. However, Cerberus is dealt with the same way in both.
- Grover loses one of the pearls when he is swallowed by Cerberus. In the book, they only had three to begin with.
- In the book, the trio pass through the Fields of Asphodel with little to no trouble. The series changes this to Annabeth nearly getting trapped before she uses one of the pearls to escape. In the book, Annabeth stays with them throughout the entire Underworld journey.
- Percy finds that he has the Master Bolt after rescuing Grover from the Pit of Tartarus. In the book, he discovers that he has it after meeting Hades.
- Hades appears to Percy in a monstrous form in the book. In the series, he appears in human form. He is also noticeably more friendly and cordial to Percy than he was in the book.
- In the book, Hades angrily accuses Percy of having his Helm and for stealing the Bolt, demanding both of them. In the series, he has no interest in the fate of the Bolt and upon learning that he does not have the Helm and that he has been hearing Kronos, offers to help him by offering sanctuary.
- In the book, the trio escape with Hades refusing to let them leave. In the series, Percy and Grover (Annabeth already left) leave with Hades only mildly confused.
- In the book, the trio end up at Santa Monica Bay where there are numerous civilians around. In the series, they end up at Percy and Sally's beach house.
