"Weekend at Muriel's" is the second segment of the twenty-second episode of Recess.

Synopsis[]

Spinelli is forced to spend a weekend with Miss Finster while her parents are away.

Plot[]

Spinelli is upset as the day prior she went to the grocery store with her parents when they ran into Miss Finster whom the Spinellis are apparently very familiar with. They tell her that they barely have any time to go out by themselves and Miss Finster suggests letting Spinelli stay with her for the weekend while they go out of town, to which they agree. Spinelli is horrified at the thought of staying at Miss Finster's home, but the Gang tell her that she will be okay. Miss Finster picks her up and takes on a slightly more jovial attitude around her, much to her confusion.

Miss Finster's apartment is very basic and her food offerings are somewhat limited. Before going to bed Spinelli finds an old photo of a younger Finster with Spinelli's grandmother. Finster gets up as early as five in the morning and does a series of workout routines before heading out for the day, of which Spinelli is dragged along. Spinelli is slightly bothered and annoyed at the various places Finster goes to such as a hair salon and pediatrist where the people there all happily greet her like an old friend. Upon returning home, Spinelli makes a call to T.J. complaining that Finster is boring. She overhears this and solemnly wonders if she truly is boring.

After Spinelli watches cartoons, Finster sets up a luau in the kitchen and convinces her to dance with her. She reluctantly does so and finds herself enjoying it. The Gang sneak a peak through the window after Spinelli's call and they all agree never to talk about this to her or anyone ever again. The next day, Finster drops Spinelli off at school where she admits the latter admits that she had fun that weekend. Finster tells her that once she steps out the car, the two of them will go back to what they once were. True to her words, Finster gets after Spinelli for being tardy, which actually seems to please her.
