"What If...The Red Guardian Stopped the Winter Soldier?" is the third episode of the third season of the Disney+ streaming television series, What If...? and the twenty-first episode of the series overall. The episode was written by A.C. Bradley and directed by Bryan Andrews. It premiered on December 24, 2024.
Synopsis[]
It is 1991, and the Red Guardian takes it upon himself to join a high-profile mission and prove himself to his Red Room superiors. When his antics interfere with the Winter Soldier's own mission to kill Howard Stark, the two Soviet supersoldiers must form an alliance to escape the United States.

Trivia[]
- The Red Guardian stopping Winter Soldier is the polar opposite to what was shown in Captain America: Civil War. Red Guardian is able to prevent Bucky from killing Howard and Maria Stark in this timeline, while the assassin was successful in the film, which was shown to Tony Stark.
- This episode takes place on December 16, 1991; the date in which Howard and Maria were assassinated by the Winter Soldier, but they are saved by the Red Guardian. The scene in which the couple are followed by the Winter Soldier is paralleled, but now with Red Guardian following them as well, to stop the killing.
