"Whoo's Afraid of the Dark?" is the second half of the fifth episode in the first season of Stanley.
Summary[]
Mysterious sounds keep Stanley awake.
Plot[]
The episode starts out with Stanley going to bed. After his mom tucks him in and closes the door, Stanley begins to hear a growling sound, which sounds like a tiger. He then goes to tell his mom that there’s a ‘tiger in his room’, which she finds hard to believe. He takes her over to his room to see and it turns out the growling came from his Sounds of the Jungle tape. She then tells him that there’s a simple explanation for scary sounds before going back to her room.
Stanley tries going back to sleep, but he ends up hearing something else: Scratch, scratch, thump, thump, splish, splash. These sounds start making Stanley feel scared and he thinks it might be a monster with sharp claws, a big tail and slimy feet. He goes back to get his mom again, but all she can see is his pets Harry, Elsie and Dennis. She then tries to comfort him by giving him Lionel’s owl nightlight.
Even after she goes back to bed, Stanley still hears the sounds and feels too scared to sleep. Realizing that they can’t get to sleep with Stanley keeping them awake, the pets decide to help him out. After noticing the nightlight, Stanley and Dennis decide to look up owls in the Great Big Book of Everything. Upon opening the book, they discover that owls can fly around without making a sound. Stanley then goes into the book with Dennis and tries to fly around in the night, but he finds it very difficult to see. Dennis explains that the reason why owls can see well in the darkness is because the pupils in their eyes open wide and catch tiny bits of light that human eyes can’t. But it’s not just their eyes that help them in the dark, but their ears as well.
So Stanley goes back to his room and decides to use his ears to figure out what the scary sounds actually were. After carefully observing, Stanley discovers that the sounds actually came from Elsie scratching her claws on the bed, Harry thumping his tail against the floor and Dennis splashing his fin in the water. He then calls his parents and Lionel to tell them that now that he knows what the sounds were, he doesn’t feel scared anymore. Finally, everyone goes to sleep. However, Elsie admits that she’s actually afraid of the dark and decides to cuddle with Stanley.
