Wildwing Flashblade[2][3] is the main protagonist from the animated series Mighty Ducks who was originally created as the mascot of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim NHL team when Disney established it in 1993. He is the leader of the Ducks on and off the ice, leading his team against the evil forces of Lord Dragaunus and the Saurians after the supposed demise of Canard Thunderbeak.
Appearances[]
Team Mascot[]
Wildwing got his name when a "Name the Mascot" contest was held when the team was being established, with the selected name being chosen for fitting the character well. Besides appearing as a walkaround mascot, a statue of Wildwing was also erected outside the stadium.
When Wildwing makes his appearances, he usually comes down from the rafters onto the ice (the first to do so), though this has occasionally led to some accidents (most famously when attempting to jump a ring of fire but tripped; he fortunately wasn't hurt). When Disney sold the team in 2005, Wildwing was retained as the team mascot as a result of fan demand and popularity, though his uniform colors would change alongside the rest of the team. During the game, Wildwing will interact with fans and attempt to hype up the crowd.
Wildwing's jersey number is 93; a reference to the year 1993 when the team was founded and played its inaugural season.
Mighty Ducks (TV series)[]
Saved by Canard back on Puckworld, Wildwing Flashblade is the leader of the Ducks on and off the ice. At first reluctant to take charge after Canard disappeared, eventually he comes to accept the role of leadership. As a hockey player, he's the goalie, known for his ability to take any kind of beating and still remain standing.
Brave like Canard before him, Wildwing is also intelligent and just. He is very kind and selfless. He usually plays the straight man to the other ducks and protector to his younger brother Nosedive. He gets along with every member of the Mighty Ducks, even though he and Mallory argued in "To Catch a Duck". Despite being sweet and patient, even Wildwing gets annoyed with Phil's antics.
Along with the mask of Drake DuCaine, Wildwing uses body armor and a Puck Launcher on his left gauntlet. Unlike his real life counterpart, his jersey number is 00.
Disney Parks[]
Wildwing appears in DisneyQuest as the host of the Mighty Ducks Pinball game/attraction; the "HoverDucks" that players stand on are also made in his likeness.
Trivia[]
- In the real NHL, goalies cannot serve as team captains; sometimes referred to as the "Durnan Rule" after Montreal Canadiens captain Bill Durnan. The rule was instituted for the 1948–49 season in response to complaints from other teams that Durnan caused unscheduled timeouts by leaving the goalie crease to argue calls with the referee.[4]
- Wildwing's 00 jersey also falls outside the league rules which does not allow players to wear 0 or 00 as a jersey number.[5]
- Genie from Aladdin impersonated Wildwing in the tv series spin-off episodes Night of the Living Mud and The Secret of Dagger Rock.
