Wynken, Blynken and Nod are the titular characters from the 1938 Silly Symphony animated short. They are based on the titular characters from the titular 1889 poem by Eugene Field.
Background[]
Wynken, Blynken, and Nod are three pajama-clad children who bear fishing lines with candy cane they use as bait to capture star-shaped fish-like creatures. They are also shown to have various troubles they encounter in their journey such as getting their shoe-boat stuck on one of the clouds, a comet passing by, or when the storm clouds began putting heavy pressure on them, giving them several challenges throughout the sequence. However, it turns out that they were all part of one child's dream as indicated at the end of the short.
Origins[]
Wynken, Blynken, and Nod are based on the titular characters from the 1889 titular poem by Eugene Field. In the story, they are three children who went sailing and fishing amongst the stars and the object they used as a method of transportation is a wooden shoe - which is used as a boat. The context of the poem shows that each of the three children are named after their own personality - the names of Wynken and Blynken being two of them having sleepy, blinking eyes while Nod being the namesake of a nodding head.
Appearances[]
Wynken, Blynken and Nod[]
Wnynken, Blynken, and Nod are first seen sailing on a wooden shoe using it as a sailboat while sailing during a quiet night while fishing in the sky. As they sail, they use fishing poles as with candy cane they use to catch bait. All of a sudden, Wynken, Blynken, and Nod disembark from their shoe, causing them to be stuck on one of the clouds. Just as they attempt to work together, Nod almost falls off the cloud just before Wynken and Blynken prevent him from falling deeper, just before they push the shoe off the cloud to continue sailing across the sea of stars. All of a sudden, they encounter a school of star-fish - star-shaped creatures shaped like fish, where Wynken tries to catch one, but has no luck. Blynken also falls on Nod, who angrily stares at him but not before a star-fish grabs Nod's bait, much to his surprise.
Just as Nod catches the star-fish that he was about to reel in, he attempts to catch it with a net, only for the creature to leap away. However, Wynken and Blynken tell Nod to be quiet to avoid scaring away the star-fish, but not before Nod impatiently attempted to catch one of them, only to be protected by Wynken and Blynken. However, the star-fish that Wynken, Blynken, and Nod captured begins leaping away from them, but not before Nod manages to free himself from the net he was using to catch one of the star-fish. Later, Wynken patiently reels in his bait to catch a star-fish while one of them starts licking it while Nod's bait falls on the spot where Wynken was catching it, just as the two struggle to capture the star-fish. However, as Nod was about to fall, Wynken and Blynken save him from falling, but not before more star-fish swim towards him, which they mistake him for candy cane, just before Wynken and Blynken attempt to save Nod from falling off. However, all of a sudden, a comet soars past the spot where the star-fish are swimming, causing them to retreat, while Wynken and Blynken were able to retrieve Nod back onto the shoe.
Just as the comet passes by again, Wynken, Blynken, and Nod catch the comet using a net, but it begins pulling the boat where the three are sailing on, causing them to fly across the sky just before encountering a storm cloud. Wynken, Blynken and Nod are unable to push their shoe out of the cloud's way, so the cloud began blowing a wind onto their shoe-boat make them navigate through the clouds. All of a sudden, more storm clouds begin blowing them across the sky, causing turbulence and trouble for the three, making it complicated for them to navigate through the storm. Wynken, Blynken, Nod, and their shoe fall off the sky with their mast being broken, just before landing back on Earth into a house hold where it was found out that it was only a dream with one boy sleeping in his bed.
Other appearances[]
Wynken, Blynken, and Nod make a cameo in Who Framed Roger Rabbit as one of the Toons.
