Buzz's primary mission in the film was to test fuel concoctions in an effort to reach hyperspeed and get the crew of the Turnip home. The monumental mission involved risky test flights, which meant multiple spacecrafts needed to be created. The XL-15 was the latest in the series of XL spacecrafts, and would have been scrapped when Commander Burnside decided to put an end to the flight tests and have the humans embrace T'Kani Prime as their new home. After Sox successfully finds a suitable formula for the crystalic engine, Buzz "borrows" the XL-15 and successfully achieves hyperspeed. He returns to T'Kani Prime twenty-years later, only to discover the planet has been invaded by alien robots, which commander the XL-15, but not before Buzz removes the crystal, with the intention of inserting it into the Turnip.
When the Zurg ship was destroyed, the XL-15 fell out of the hanger, along with Buzz and the Junior Zap Patrol. Buzz was able to reinsert the crystal and get behind the controls. He flew XL-15 to save Izzy Hawthorne, Mo Morrison, and Darby Steel, but fell under attack by Zurg, who tore the ship apart.
