- “I was a girl like you when people turned on me. You don't think I longed for a noble path? I've lived a life of exile. No country, no village, no family. We are the same.”
- ―Xianniang confronting Mulan[src]
Xianniang is the secondary antagonist in the 2020 live-action remake of Mulan. She is a powerful witch who can shapeshift into a falcon. She can also possess people and shapeshift into those she possesses. She fights alongside Böri Khan in his goal to invade China. Like Mulan, Xianniang has a very strong chi, however, hers is unbalanced giving her great powers. Impersonating the Emperor's chancellor, she convinces China to gather troops to fight the northern invaders and lead them into traps. One such battle she took part in was in a valley against Commander Tung's unit. During the conflict, she learns that Mulan is actually a woman and comes into direct conflict with her, taunting her about her false identity.
Role in the film[]
Xianniang is first seen in her human form approaching a peddler and his camels on the Silk Road just as she stares at him passing by the peddler. She then raids the village attacking a group of guards patrolling a garrison while Böri Khan and his army take on the guards starting an ambush on the Silk Road, causing destruction across the marketplace. Meanwhile, Xianniang transforms from her witch form to her falcon form as she flies to the Rouran camp where she reports to Böri Khan that the Emperor is sending his army to fight back as Böri Khan plans to kill the Emperor, which he tells her to help him finish as Xianniang agrees to help Böri Khan succeed his mission.
The next day, Xianniang (in her falcon form) attends a meeting enforced by Böri Khan telling his army that they will take revenge against the Emperor by killing him after surrendering to their last battle as well as planning to take over the Imperial City in revenge. Xianniang, who transforms into her human form, tells Böri Khan that she serves him just as Böri Khan shows Xianniang the next garrison, telling her to destroy it.
Xianniang takes on more guards during the ambush at the Silk Road while Böri Khan and his fellow Rourans start an ambush across the marketplace, causing a lot of mayhem across the village. Later during the battle against the Rourans, Mulan encounters Xianniang who knocks her off her horse while evading the troops where Mulan confronts her for being a witch. As Mulan attempts to kill her, Xianniang blocks her attacks and attempts to kill her, urging her to tell her that who she is, which Mulan tells her that she is "Hua Jun", not realizing that she is telling a lie, just as Xianniang warns Mulan that she will face her fate if she continues to tell her about her disguise which Xianniang injures Mulan onto a volcanic lake which Mulan retains her consciousness as she sees the Phoenix next to her just as she studies the inscription to understand the virtue of being true planning to fight back against the Rourans. When Mulan returns to the battlefield, Xianniang (in her falcon form) spots Mulan taking on various Rourans in battle which Xianniang transforms herself into thousands of blackbirds attacking the Imperial Army which the soldiers of the Imperial Army shield themselves to avoid getting attacked as a defensive position just as the Rourans ready themselves to use a catapult to fire flaming boulders at the Imperial Army, only for Mulan to trick them into firing flaming boulders at a snowy mountain, causing the Rourans to be engulfed by the avalanche.
After Mulan is banished from the army, she hears Xianniang telling her that she can never go home for bringing disgrace to her family just as Mulan approaches Xianniang who remembers that she made people turn on her, just as she tells Mulan of the imminent attack on the Imperial City, which leads Mulan to join Xianniang to help save the Emperor. Xianniang transforms into her falcon form and enters the Imperial City, approaching the Chancellor in his room giving an alert to him that the Rourans have survived the avalanche, which the Chancellor reports to the Emperor about this.
As Mulan leads the army to rescue the Emperor, Xianniang confronts Mulan in the throne room of the Palace, just as Mulan admires the way she leads the army while staying true to herself during a discussion with Xianniang, trying to convince her that it is not too late. Xianniang transforms into her falcon form in a plan to find the Emperor which Mulan follows her into the workshop where the Emperor was captured. Xianniang later sacrifices herself to protect Mulan from Böri Khan's arrow and dies in Mulan's arms.
