"You'll Be in My Heart" is a motherly love song featured in Disney's 1999 animated feature film Tarzan, sung by Phil Collins. A version of the single performed by Glenn Close also appears on the soundtrack. The song is used in a scene when Tarzan's adoptive mother gorilla Kala sings that her baby should stop crying because she will protect her baby, and keep him safe and warm. She says everything will be fine and she tells him that "you will be in my heart always". Another version of this song is played near the end where Kala shows Tarzan his old house. Later on the song is played one more time during the movie's ending credits.
The song went on to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The song was also nominated for AFI's 100 years...100 songs, as one of 15 songs from Disney and one of 17 songs from an animated movie to be nominated. The songs that eventually made the cut was: When You Wish Upon A Star (#7), Someday My Prince Will Come (#19), Beauty and the Beast (#62), and Hakuna Matata (#99).
The song was considered to be one of the most successful singles, critically and commercially, in 1999. This song is usually a romantic love song.
Lyrics[]
The song, originally called "Lullaby" is used in a scene when Tarzan's adoptive gorilla mother Kala sings that her baby should stop crying because she will protect her baby, and keep him safe and warm. She says everything will be fine and she tells him that "you will be in my heart always". In the movie the song ends on the first verse, the full version of the song on the soundtrack album notes that others don't understand why a mother and child who are so different can love each other. When destiny calls, the child is told he must be strong even if the parent is not with him. The song is one of only two songs within Disney's Tarzan to have a part performed by an actual character (the other being "Trashin' the Camp" which the character's role in the song can be classified as scat singing). The rest of the songs were performed by Collins himself and overlaid into the movie. The full song is finally played all together during the end credits.
Kala: Come stop your cryin' it'll be alright
Just take my hand, hold it tight
I will protect you from all around you,
I will be here, don't you cry
Phil Collins: For one so small, you seem so strong
My arms will hold you keep you safe and warm,
This bond between us can't be broken,
I will be here, don't you cry
'Cause you'll be in my heart,
yes you'll be in my heart,
From this day on now and forevermore
You'll be in my heart,
No matter what they say,
You'll be here in my heart,
Always...
Kala: Always...
Come stop your crying
It will be all right
Just take my hand
Hold it tight
I will protect you
From all around you
I will be here
Don't you cry
For one so small,
You seem so strong
My arms will hold you,
Keep you safe and warm
This bond between us
Can't be broken
I will be here
Don't you cry
'Cause you'll be in my heart
Yes, you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forever more
You'll be in my heart
No matter what they say
You'll be here in my heart always
Why can't they understand the way we feel?
They just don't trust what they can't explain
I know we’re different but deep inside us
We're not that different at all
And you'll be in my heart
Yes, you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forever more
Don't listen to them
'Cause what do they know (what do they know)?
We need each other
To have, to hold.
They'll see in time
I know
When destiny calls you
You must be strong (you gotta be strong)
I may not be with you
But you got to hold on
They'll see in time
I know
We’ll show them together
‘Cause you'll be in my heart
Believe me, you'll be in my heart
I'll be there from this day on,
Now and forever more
Oh, you'll be in my heart (you'll be here in my heart)
No matter what they say (I'll be with you)
You'll be here in my heart (I'll be there) always
Always
I'll be with you
I'll be there for you always
Always and always
Just look over your shoulder
Just look over your shoulder
Just look over your shoulder
I'll be there always.
Come stop your crying
It will be all right
Just take my hand
Hold it tight
I will protect you
From all around you
I will be here
Don't you cry
For one so small,
You seem so strong
My arms will hold you,
Keep you safe and warm
This bond between us
Can't be broken
I will be here
Don't you cry
'Cause you'll be in my heart
Yes, you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forever more
You'll be in my heart
No matter what they say
You'll be here in my heart always
Why can't they understand the way we feel?
They just don't trust what they can't explain
I know we’re different but deep inside us
We're not that different at all
And you'll be in my heart
Yes, you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forever more
Don't listen to him
'Cause what do they know? (Love is all that we know)
We need each other
To have, to hold.
He'll see in time (In this paradise)
I know (We are family)
When destiny calls you
You must be strong (We watch our love grow)
I may not be with you
But you got to hold on
They'll see in time (In this paradise)
I know
We’ll show them together
‘Cause you'll be in my heart (You'll be in my heart)
Yes, you'll be in my heart (Now and for always)
I'll be there from this day on,
Now and forever more
Oh, you'll be in my heart (You'll be in my heart)
No matter what they say (Now and for always)
You'll be here in my heart always
Always...
Always...
Tarzan: Don't be afraid
It will be all right
Just take my hand
Hold it tight
No matter where I am
I'll be with you
Just think of me
Don't you cry
Tarzan and Kala: No one could understand the way we feel
How would they know, how could we explain?
Although we're different, deep inside us
We're not that different at all
'Cause you'll be in my heart
Yes, you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forever more
Tarzan: You'll be in my heart (Kala: You'll be here in my heart)
No matter what they say (Oh, you'll be with me)
You'll be here in my heart (Here in my heart)
Always (2x)
Mother...
I'll be there for you always
Kala: Always and always
Tarzan: Just look over your shoulder
Just look over your shoulder
Kala: Just look over your shoulder
Tarzan and Kala: Turn around and look over your shoulder
'Cause I'll be there always.
You'll be in my heart
En mi corazón (In my heart)
From this day on
Now and forever more (In every beat of my proud corazón)
Está en mi corazón (You'll be in my heart)
No matter what they say
Está en mi corazón (You'll be in my heart)
Siempre... (Always...)
You are my proud corazón!

Charts and awards[]
"You'll Be in My Heart", spent nineteen non consecutive weeks at number one on the Adult Contemporary charts and peaked at #21 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The song was Collins's first appearance on the top forty of the Billboard Hot 100 chart since 1994's "Everyday". The track peaked at #17 in the UK Singles Chart, continuing his success that had not stopped after "Everyday". The song went on to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Collins performed the song live at that year's ceremony. The song also received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media, but lost to "When She Loved Me", from Toy Story 2.

Trivia[]
- This was the last song from a Walt Disney Animation Studios-produced film to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song until Let It Go from Frozen 14 years later. Between their respective films, songs from the studio were nominated for the award, but did not win. Pixar films, however, were still claiming the Best Original Song award.
- Some of the nominees for Best Original Song in the 72nd Academy Awards were upset that this song won the Oscar.
- Trey Parker of South Park fame, who co-wrote "Blame Canada" for South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, stated that he was planning on not winning the Oscar anyway, but not to Phil Collins. An episode of "Timmy 2000" was made parodying Collins with his own song, "You'll Be in Me," based on this song.
- Aimee Man, who wrote and sang "Save Me" for Magnolia, had stated that her song is "the song that lost an Oscar to Phil Collins and his cartoon monkey love song".
- There is an official video to the song, but there are no clips from the movie. However, a graffiti sketch of Disney's portrayal of Tarzan was drawn on a wall during the scene where a man in a wheelchair is bouncing a basketball.
- Although used as the first of two ending songs for the films credits (alongside Two Worlds), in the German dub it was replaced with the english version of Son of Man.
- The lines about looking over your shoulder evoke a double-meaning, both rooted in Abrahamic religious beliefs. One, symbolizing God's faithfulness, the other symbolizing looking back at an incompatible culture.
- During the song at the beginning when Kala lifts Baby Tarzan up with her feet and before the butterfly flies on his nose a man's voice can be heard in the background saying Pixar Sucks! (very serious, not kidding not joking)
