This article is about the character from Percy Jackson and the Olympians. For other characters, see Zeus.

Zeus is a supporting character in the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. He is the God of Lightning and the Skies and rules all of Olympus. He is also the father of Ares.

Background[]

Personality[]

Zeus is portrayed as a mostly calm individual, that is, until he is offended or disturbed in some way. While he is not unreasonable, he is most certainly quick to anger and does not hold back on threats. Out of all the gods, he is by far the most prideful of his position as the leader of all the gods and is not afraid of showing it.

Physical appearance[]

Zeus is a tall older man, who, contrary to past appearances, is depicted as being bald and clean-shaven. He dresses in a nice black pinstripe suit with an accompanying grey tie.

Powers and abilities[]

Zeus is the master of the skies and can control the weather. Being the leader of all the gods, it is implied that he has some degree of control over them. He also posses the Master Bolt which allows him to make thunder and lightning.

Role in the series[]

The Lightning Thief[]

Zeus was among the most powerful of the gods and rescued his siblings from Kronos before imprisoning him in the Pit of Tartarus. While it became a habit of the gods to sire children with humans, Zeus, along with his brothers Poseidon and Hades made a pact to not have anymore children, a pact that they would obviously break. Zeus sired the child Thalia Grace who would give her life and inspire other demigods while Poseidon would sire Percy Jackson. Despite not showing it, Zeus loved Thalia and maintained her life via turning her into a tree that guarded Camp Half-Blood.

Zeus' Master Bolt would be stolen by Luke Castellan, the son of Hermes, yet Zeus would accuse Poseidon, and Percy, of the theft and promised to go to war with him should it not be returned. Percy would ultimately go on a major quest, successfully finding and retrieving it. However, he would not be able to bring it back in time. Upon bringing the Bolt to Zeus, Zeus was thankful, but informed Percy that he still failed and would go to war. This angers Percy who accused him of using fear to control his family and that they would slowly turn on him to release Kronos just like Ares. Zeus becomes infuriated, but Poseidon arrives and announces his surrender to spare Percy. Zeus, satisfied with the outcome, decides to let Percy go and leaves, telling Poseidon to never bring his son near him again.

Trivia[]

  • Prior to Lance Reddick playing him, Zeus was played by Sean Bean in the live-action film.
  • This is the last television role that Lance Reddick played before his death. On recasting, the producers admitted that there was "little bit of denial", but added that "I do not envy whoever ends up having to step in his shoes".[1]
