Zhu Bajie, better known as Pigsy, is a minor character in the Disney+ series American Born Chinese.
Background[]
In most tellings, Zhu Bajie, or Pigsy, was once a celestial who, due to his rowdy and rude behavior, was sent to be reincarnated on Earth. However, due to a mishap, he ended up being reborn as a man-pig hybrid creature. He is discovered by Sun Wukong and Tripitaka who defeat him in battle. Guanyin arrives and suggests that Pigsy join them on their pilgrimage, becoming a friend and ally to the group. In the end, he achieves enlightenment and becomes, essentially a royal janitor, to the Gods in Heaven.
Personality[]
Zhu Bajie is portrayed as being short-tempered and savage. Due to his piggy habits, he is shown to be a glutton and was easily distracted by food that was thrown his way. He is a very loyal soldier however, as he is shown sticking close to Sun Wukong, his leader.
Physical appearance[]
Zhu Bajie resembles a humanoid pig, bald, pink, with a snout and small flat ears. Additionally, he has sharp teeth, giving him boar-like features as well.
Powers and abilities[]
Zhu Bajie is a well-adapt martial arts fighter, his main weapon appears to be a rake, though he can also fight with his bare fists. He, just like his other celestial comrades, can teleport to Eartha and Heaven at will.
Trivia[]
- Zhu Bajie did not appear in the graphic novel, but he is considered a popular character from the original Journey to the West story, second only to Sun Wukong.
