Zootopia 2 is an upcoming American 3D computer-animated adventure-comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, the film is a sequel to the 2016 film Zootopia. It will be the 64th animated feature in the Disney Animated Canon, and is scheduled to be released on November 26, 2025.

Synopsis

Detectives Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde must go undercover in Marsh Market to crack the case when they find themselves on the twisting trail of a mysterious reptile.

Production

On February 8, 2023, during the Q1 earnings call, Bob Iger confirmed that a sequel to Zootopia is in development. Later that day, screenwriter Jared Bush confirmed that he is working on the film and Ginnifer Goodwin, who voices Judy Hopps, told CinemaBlend that she'd like to see a role reversal between Judy and Nick in the sequel. "I would like to see Nick have to be the one to convince Judy that the world is worth fighting for," Ginnifer said. Jason Bateman, who voices Nick Wilde, also told CinemaBlend about his idea for the sequel. "The two of us [Nick and Judy]. kicking butt out there. Cleaning up the streets. We're a couple of new cops out there. So, bad guys, be warned," he said.

On February 7, 2024, during the Q1 earnings call, Bob Iger confirmed that the film would be released on November 26, 2025. On March 7, 2024, Jennifer Lee confirmed that she will serves as executive producer. In April 2024, Goodwin confirmed on her Instagram account that she began recording her lines for Judy, revealing that the film is in production.

On August 9, 2024 at the D23 Expo, it was announced that Zootopia 2 would feature reptiles, and Ke Huy Quan was announced to be voicing Gary, a snake being pursued by Nick and Judy. Footage was also shown of a sequence in which Nick and Judy search for Gary in Marsh Market. The following day, Bush revealed on his X account that Fortune Feimster joined the cast to voice a beaver named Nibbles. The same month, Bush was revealed to be the sole writer and director of the sequel, and Yvett Merino was revealed to be the producer. In an interview at D23, Goodwin admitted the sequel has secretly been in development since 2017.^{[citation needed]} In September, it was announced that Byron Howard would return as director.

• This will be the third Walt Disney Animation Studios film of the 2020s to be produced in a 2:39:1 aspect ratio after Raya and the Last Dragon and Strange World.
  • This will be the eighth Disney animated film of the 2020s to be produced in a 2:39:1 aspect ratio after Onward, Soul, Raya and the Last Dragon, Lightyear, Strange World, Inside Out 2, and Elio.
• Like Toy Story 4 and Inside Out 2, this sequel will release nine years after its predecessor. This will also be the first Walt Disney Animation Studios film to be released nine years after its predecessor.
• This will be Disney media with the most Zootopia characters present in one project since Disney Heroes: Battle Mode, which has 10 characters from this movie and some others in the form of cameos.
• This will be the first Zootopia film released in November, unlike the first film, which was released in March.
• This will be the first and only Disney Animated Canon film so far to be released on a perfect square year.
• This is the first time that this franchise will feature reptiles and marine mammals.
• This film acknowledges that "meat" in this world is relegated to bug protein, as evidenced by the concept art depicting a bug burger truck. This was something that Byron Howard acknowledged in an interview while promoting the first film.
• A character strongly resembling one of the Razorbacks can be seen in promotional artwork, so it's possible they might appear in this sequel.
• Zootopia 2 being Disney's next movie was foreshadowed by an easter egg of Gary the Snake being one of the woven tapestries in the credits of Moana 2.
• The second trailer of Zootopia 2 was coincidentally released on the same day as a trailer for another talking animal film from Sony Pictures Animation, Goat.
